After School Programs

Whether your kids seek adventure or learning a new sport Whaleback has the perfect program for school-age children!  Our After-School Ski & Ride programs are designed to provide a safe, fun, healthy and enriching learning environment. Not many kids can say that their after-school activity involves strapping on skis or a snowboard and taking a run before homework!

We foster an encouraging atmosphere that’s conducive to learning. Our lights come on when the sun goes down and you’re welcome to ski with your kids at pickup for only $20 or free if you have a pass!

All programs have a volunteer after-school ski coordinator from your school community. The coordinator will attend weekly sessions, for the duration of the program, to organize student groups at check-in and check-out.  They also coordinate school groups and communicate info and appropriate paper work.

If you're interested in starting an after-school program at your school and becoming a coordinator, please contact for additional info. ALL school coordinators receive a free season pass limited to a first-come, first-served basis.

Programs vary from schools to local rec departments. Some schools offer early dismissal while other school groups head to the mountain at the end of the school day. Some groups provide transportation, while others organize a carpool.

If you rent your equipment at Whaleback, your school will have a designated fitting day at our Rental Shop, prior to the start of the 6-week program.

If  you would like your school to participate with Whaleback's program, please contact for more information.

We offer financial assistance based on need and availability.

Once students arrive at the mountain, their after-school coordinator will check them in at the lodge and our staff will assign them an instructor. Their instructor will take them out to the deck where their rentals or own equipment will be waiting for them. They're off to our learning area to enjoy their lesson! Afterwards, they're lead back to the lodge by their instructor for checkout and pickup or free ski with their designated pickup person.

After School FAQ

Are students grouped by ability or age? First we group students by ability, but then if there are enough participants within that ability we further group them by age.

What is the student to instructor ratio? We strive to achieve an 8 to 1 ratio, or better for the younger, never-been-on-snow groups.

Will my child ride the chairlift alone? Students only ride the chairlift alone if they have already been on chairlifts or the instructor feels comfortable letting them do so based on their age and ability. Otherwise younger students are paired with adults or older capable students.

Do you offer financial aid? There is financial aid available and all information is held in the strictest confidence. Please click here to get info and complete the application.

Can I ski with my child after their lesson? Once the program ends for the day, students are welcome to free ski/ride until closing. Parent may join them once they purchase a ticket or have a season pass. The last 2 hours of any day is $20!

What is the best way to register? Each town, school, or participating recreation program is handled a bit differently. Please visit the After School page to register. For some, you will do it through the coordinator, for others you do it directly through Whaleback.

How is transportation handled? Is there a bus? Again, each town is handled a bit differently so please check the information at the website. Only a few schools or recreation departments provide buses. For others, it is dependent on parents and carpooling with friends.

Who is monitoring my child when they are at the mountain? Each child must check in and check out at the After School desk on the first floor of the lodge by your after-school coordinator. Once checked in they are assigned to an instructor and head out to start their lesson!

Our goal is for the same instructor to have your child on a weekly basis. We invite parents to chaperone and ski/ride free for that day.

Please ask your after school coordinator about chaperoning needs or email for additional info
